Barossa Valley, South Australia

St John’s Road is a celebration of what the Barossa does best. Eden Valley’s high-altitude elegance and structure is personified in the pristine Peace of Eden Riesling. Whilst the warmer Valley floor is perfectly represented by the Blood & Courage Shiraz and its Grenache based siblings. These wines are modern Barossa. An abundance of flavour with elegance, style and longevity. A new generation of growers wrestle with ancient soils, old vines and family histories. Whilst our winemakers, work hand in glove with these growers to write the new stories that define a Modern Barossa.

Barossa Valley, South Australia

34.5333° S, 138.9500° E

The Barossa Valley is a renowned wine-producing region northeast of Adelaide, in South Australia. The area encompasses towns such as Tanunda, Angaston and Nuriootpa, and an array of high-profile wineries offering tours and cellar-door tastings. Shiraz grapes are the local speciality. The stone cottages and Lutheran churches throughout the region are testament to a 19th-century wave of German settlers.

Winemaker

James Lienert

James was born and raised on a farm in the Gomersal/Sheaoak Log region of the Barossa Valley, an area well populated by Lienerts thanks to James’ large family.

Working to his strengths and interests, James enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (Organic and Inorganic Chemistry) at the University of Adelaide, following high school. With winemaking as his second preference he jumped at the offer of an honours position in wine chemistry, seeing this as a valuable step in the right direction. The endless hours in a “windowless lab” confirmed to James that, regardless of his love for chemistry, the Mad Professor life was not for him! The allure of winemaking (and being outdoors) proved irresistible, and to cement this decision, James completed a Masters in Oenology in 2011 - 2012.

Amongst all this study James has still managed to fit in 16 vintages at wine regions around the world. Following his first stint at Penfolds in 2008 he has since completed vintages in New Zealand, USA and Germany. He now finds himself back in his hometown, working as winemaker for St John’s Road alongside Keeda Zilm and Andrew Hardy.
