Irrewarra

Location_tag

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Irewarra – Wines from a Farr. Irrewarra, meaning “long spear throw” in Aboriginal language, is a vineyard located in the heart of Victoria’s Western District, 150 km south-west of Melbourne. This cool-climate site brings out the complexity and character of every varietal planted. Crafted by winemaker Nick Farr of By Farr Wines, Irrewarra produces wines built around the seasons, the sense of place, and a true expression of emotion. Unyielding in quality, each bottle reflects both the land and the passion behind it.

Wine list

Irrewarra Pinot Noir

2023

Spice, grip and char, then softness – then more tart, bright, sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes.

Irrewarra Chardonnay

2024

Lovely white gold in the glass, the palate is cool from the fridge yet immediately giving. It has a softness that defers to finer notes of acidity, ripe citrus and barley sugar, with delicate honey and creaminess.

Winemaker

Nick Farr

Nick Farr readily acknowledges the influence of his father on his winemaking and viticultural practices—though these have been significantly enhanced by his own extensive experience.

Growing up, Nick often worked alongside his father on the family estate before completing a stint at Rosemount in the Hunter Valley in the late 1990s. This was followed by further vintages with Gary, as well as time at Innisfail Vineyards in the Bannockburn area, where Nick launched his own label, Farr Rising.

Like his father, Nick has gained international experience, including time at Cristom in Oregon, Au Bon Climat in California, and Domaine Dujac in Burgundy.

Nick’s enthusiasm and passion for wine are captivating. A solid grounding in both new- and old-world winemaking philosophies provides the perfect foundation for his individual tastes and ideas.

“The wines we make are not mainstream—they are expressions of our vineyard, our land, and what we like to drink. That is what we promise to deliver.” — Nick Farr

Vineyard

These two wines represent a singular focus toward making the absolute best from a site or region that, until recently, was known for almost anything but premium wine production. Irrewarra, in my opinion, shows that when the gaze of the Farr’s turns toward a goal, anything is possible. These wines, which began young, fresh and full of potential, have evolved into some of the best Pinot and Chardonnay in the country.
